That is the danger of every new generation of children into homes where the parents are believers. Each new generation much personally become sons and daughters of God. Do you have a personal relationship with Jesus? Have you asked Him to absorb the wrath of God against your sins. When God forgives He does so because the righteous requirement for punishment of those sins has been met. Has Jesus taken your sins upon Himself? Right where you sit bow your heart before Jesus, lay your own will and way at His crucified feet and say to Him — not my will but Thine be done.
I believe You gave Yourself for ME. By faith I take your gift of salvation. It is dangerous when you think that you have a physical basis for coming to Jesus. Mary was Christ's mother, his four named brothers were half-brothers — but no physical relationship by default causes anyone to have a closer place, better access, and so on. No one enters Christ's family by physical birth like his brothers but by spiritual birth those seated around Him. No water baptism can give you a relationship with Jesus.
You see, anyone who is in Christ Jesus is closer to Him than His physical mother and His physical brothers were in that day. That is bringing us wonderfully close to Him, my friend . It is dangerous when you become over-familiar with Jesus. And He did so in public. Mary needed to be reminded, just like we do — that Jesus is God the Son. That thought He had lost His mind. We must never presume upon Him. None of these are in God's Word. It is a form of idolatry to bestow on Mary honor, titles, or attributes that in effect give her a coequal status in the redemptive work of her Son or elevate her as a special object of veneration.
Nonetheless, Christ loved and honored His mother as a mother. He fulfilled the fifth commandment as perfectly as He fulfilled them all.
Christ did not neglect that duty. The question isn't so much whether others thought this way previously, but why it is presently emphasized as a "prominent theme. However, the concepts themselves - when understood correctly - can certainly be found in very explicit terms within Scripture.
The idea of a "personal relationship with Jesus" speaks primarily to the idea that a person does not just know about the historical character called Jesus the Christ in a purely historical or religious context.
It speaks to the fact that the Gospel of Jesus Christ is the message that by placing one's trust in Jesus for the forgiveness of their personal sins they can have restored fellowship with God, and a direct relationship with him where God listens to the individual and relates to the individual through the Holy Spirit, through the Scriptures, and through the Body of Christ the Church. The phrase speaks to the personal nature of this relationship and how biblical Salvation is a personal process where God interacts individually with each of the people he is giving salvation to - not just in a generic and disconnected relationship to all of mankind.
While we do not read the words as such in the Scriptures, neither do we read any of our English words in the original text - all are an interpretation. But while we don't read these words even in our English interpretation, the concept behind them is very much present in many passages throughout the New Testamant.
So while I would assert that the actual words in question have been made popular by contemporary evangelical leaders who started the exact linguistic combination of words I surely don't knowI would also argue that the concept which they actually represent is not unique to our culture, or some post-enlightenment thinking. The idea of personal salvation is very explicitly discussed in the Scriptures. Here's a few of the passages in the New Testament that make the case: If anyone loves me, they will obey me.
Then my Father will love them, and we will come to them and live in them. I have told you these things while I am still with you. But the Holy Spirit will come and help you, because the Father will send the Spirit to take my place.
The Spirit will teach you everything and will remind you of what I said while I was with you. Early Christians believed that Jesus was present in their lives, transforming them morally and ethically, blessing their families and relationships. Christianity enabled believers to love God in a direct, reciprocal manner, and to love their neighbours in ways that created a more compassionate, egalitarian and just society.
If so, then many Pagans will have eternal life. If so, then righteous people of all faiths will have eternal life. But what exactly did they have to believe and how sincerely did they have to believe it to have eternal life?
What would someone have to do or believe or not believe to be eternally condemned? Such vague and arbitrary boundaries between salvation and damnation are unworthy of a just God. No one can make an eternally binding decision to believe or reject without full knowledge of who Jesus is and what he represents.
The Early Church believed that God had provided a future time and place where the unfinished business of this world will be brought to completion. Blind belief in the historical Jesus is far less meaningful than a personal relationship with the spirit of Jesus, which in turn is far less tangible that a direct relationship with the person of Jesus.
The year resurrection will make it possible for human choice to be fully expressed and divine justice to be fully and fairly executed. Those who chose to believe will know what they believe.
How can I have a deeper relationship with Jesus?
Although it is hard to imagine why others will reject salvation, they will be free to do so with full knowledge of the consequences. Augustine refused to believe in a literal year resurrection. He had no need of it.
After Augustine became Bishop and a holy warrior, he refused to believe in freewill. In fact freewill and personal responsibility were anathema to mass conversion. God may have the time and patience to allow people to understand the full consequences of love, hate, selfishness and cooperation; Augustine had an entire Pagan Empire to convert quickly; no debate could be permitted and no exceptions granted.
Augustine based the wrath of God on Original Sinrelegating personal sin and a personal relationship with Jesus to secondary status. The implications of this new doctrine were profound. Because condemnation was transferred from personal sin to imputed sin, the Gospel of Wrath became dependent upon the literal, historical rebellion.
Original Sin is dependent on two literal, historical people named Adam and Eve. The Gospel of Wrath would collapse if the entire human race were not descended from those two rebellious, cursed individuals. The historical Jesus is necessary to atone for the rebellion of historical Adam so that salvation can be imputed to babies.
